One Book-One Lincoln: From Page to Stage

One Book-One Lincoln: From Page to Stage

Can you name the four U.S. presidents who were assassinated while in office? Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy may come quickly to mind. Some might recall our 25th President, William McKinley. Few will remember our 20th President, even though there is a street in Lincoln named after him, Garfield Street.
.
President James A. Garfield, served only a brief four months in office in 1881, at a time when the President of the U.S. had no Secret Service protection. Garfield was gunned down by a disgruntled lunatic. But, the bullet didn't kill Garfield. His doctors did.

"Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President" details the mayhem surrounding Garfield's death, in a riveting, page-turning historical novel, written by best-selling author Candice Millard and chosen as the One Book-One Lincoln winner by the Lincoln City Libraries.

The OLLI/Playhouse Radio-Active Players, in collaboration with the Lincoln City Libraries, will bring the death of a president to life in two staged readings on Monday, January 14, at 1:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Lincoln Community Playhouse, 2500 South 56th St. Morrie Enders, Executive Director of the Playhouse, will direct the production. Admission is free and open to the public. No registration is required for this open-seating presentation.

Garfield's secretary will bring this meticulously researched book from the page to the stage, serving as the connective thread for the major characters in the book: President Garfield, his assassin, his doctor, his wife, Alexander Graham Bell and other political adversaries.

Forty minutes of dramatic excerpts selected by Layne Pierce, the One Book-One Lincoln coordinator, will be read from the book by the OLLI/Playhouse Radio-Active Players. The performance will be followed by an opportunity for the audience to ask questions or make comments about the book and performance, facilitated by members of the Libraries staff, the Playhouse and the cast.

This popular book is currently in great demand at the library.

Although you may not have read it yet, when you hear the characters speak, you may want to add your name to the waiting list and learn the rest of the story.

Copies of the book are available at all Lincoln City Libraries locations in print, or CD and downloadable audio, or e-book format. Visit the Lincoln City Libraries website at www.lincolnlibraries.org, or call 402-441-8500 for assistance.
